hunger

Do you think "normal" eaters spend a lot of time hungry? I've done well this past week with normal eating -- no overeating, no bingeing. But I've spend a lot of time hungry. No matter what I eat for breakfast at 7am (and I've tried it all, from oatmeal to peanut butter toast to frozen South Beach pizzas!), I'm hungry by 10am and positively ravenous by noon. My lunch is usually at 1pm so I almost always eat some sort of snack around 11, but it doesn't usually do much for me. After lunch I'm okay for a few hours, but I'm almost always ravenous again by 5pm. It seems ridiculous. What in the heck do normal people eat that they're not constantly dwelling on how hungry they are?

I also have the 10am hunger pains even if I have a huge breakfast! So I tend to have a smaller breakfast and save some fruit for my 10am snack! Then I have my lunch veggies at 11 and the main meal around 12:30 another snack at 3 and supper at 6! I'm constantly eatting (since I started dieting) and I've been sucessful at loosing almost 35lbs in 3 months!! I would break up your meals into smaller portions so you don't have to feel thoughs hunger pains ?

Ah, you're cute, WMC! Well, I used to spend a HUGE amount of time thinking about food, being hungry, thinking about what I was going to eat NEXT, WHILE I was still eating the first thing. I found for me, it's largely psychological...keep busy. But, here's how I eat (if it'll help):

Breakfast: 8:30 a.m. Usually 1/2 cup oatmeal with Splenda, no butter or egg beaters on a whole wheat english muffin

Lunch: 11:45...I'll eat half my lunch now...so, half a sandwich and maybe a few crackers.

Gym...

After gym...the other half of my lunch, so maybe the other half of my sandwich and a piece of fruit. This is usually around 1:30 or so.

3:30: snack...usually carbohydrates. Chips and salsa, granola bar, or cheese & crackers

6:30: dinner. 3-4 oz. meat, 1/2 cup rice/pasta/potato and 2 vegs.

And that's enough. If you'd asked me even 6 months ago if that would be enough food for one day, I'd say you were nuts. But it is...takes some time, but it's enough. Now, that's not to say some days I don't go off the deep end (PMS), but, I'm ok most of the time.

Good luck!!

I always have a bowl of Kashi Go Lean cereal with low fat/skim milk. And coffe. Something about all the whole grains makes me feel full and satisfied without feeling gross.

Thanks for the suggestions, ladies. I have tried many cereals, but they don't work either. I think part of my problem is that I work out upon waking. Breaking my meals into smaller portions wouldn't really work because my portions are already pretty darn small. But for now, I will live with some hunger and see how things go...

A banana does the trick for me, half way through the morning. But then, I'm not at all thin, so perhaps this is why!

I'm rooting for you, anyway.

If you're hungry, you just simply may not be getting enough to eat. I am sometimes extremely hungry in the mornings, and I just eat what it is my body is wanting until I'm satisfied (you know, trying to eat slowly and giving it 20 minutes to see if I'm full or still hungry). My old diet mentality tells me to stop at this or that, but if I'm still hungry, I'm gonna get more. If I do that, then I find I'm really not as hungry in the afternoon, so it all balances out. Maybe your body is like mine and needs more in the morning!

I think many of us need a lot more protein at breakfast than we think. I've recently ramped mine up to fight sugar cravings... and now I can usually go at least 4 hours, maybe 5 between breakfast and lunch...

Yes, I've eaten protein at breakfast for about two years now. Usually I have a tortilla with some chicken breast and laughing cow cheese in it, but I've also eaten things like a Lean Cuisine pizza or South Beach Pizza. If I eat the SB pizza (with about 30g of protein) I will usually not be ravenous until after noon. Too bad it's just not too healthy!

I realize this post is way old but I'm working my way through your archives. As a recovering binger I say yes! I thinking about my eating/weight as much as I did when I weighed 50 pounds more and was binging every day. The difference is that it's easier to do it, to pass up the little treats and stuff day to day when you've been at it and have seen the improvements. I did used to think that once you hit that 'normal' BMI everything would click and you wouldn't have to worry about that, but it's not the case at all. Which is annoying and a relief at the same time!
